A man’s country is not a certain area of land, of mountains, rivers, and woods, but it is a principle and patriotism is loyalty to that principle. George William Curtis
I have long believed that sacrifice is the pinnacle of patriotism. Bob Riley
Patriotism was a living fire of unquestioned belief and purpose. Frank Knox
I’ve often longed to say this as my elders did say to me, “ Back in my day”, now I am of the age where I can say, “ back in my day” we called Memorial Day “ Decoration Day”. I can remember dressing in a frilly dress with cancan petticoat underneath, white dress clothes, black patent maryjanes, to go out to the cemetery to decorate the families’ soldiers graves who had given their lives for our protection for our welfare, for our country. Recently I ran into a cousin who is an officer of our military. He travels between Afganistan, Iraq, Iran, South Africa leading troops. He has served in desert Storm, he was there when the soldiers got Bin Laden. I thanked him. He just, “ it’s a sacrifice, but we have to do it, to preserve our land”. Wow, just wow. The thought that someone would just so casually give up, make severe sacrifices for everyone else to be happy, safe. My cousin has a wife, 2 boys. Reflecting on each of us, I see what spirit is trying to teach each of us on this day. We all have dreams, we all have goals, but we, feeling entitled, or sometimes feeling punished, do not realize that all good things have a price, have a sacrifice. Sometimes we just have to sacrifice our time. We are so willing to just quit. I often wonder where we all would be if Ben Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, the patriots of the evolution, had just quit because the time took years. For the civil war – the actual war was from 1862 – 1865 but even now the war on racism, on prejudice against women, against race, against religion, against creed still is a battle we fight to gain freedom, to gain peace. We are all soldiers of life, going forward into the battle of life, to fight for the dreams, to sacrifice for what we know is right, we will win while we trust in spirit. Today we decorate for those who died to help us, today we head into our own private battles with the knowledge that we, too, have sacrificed for our dream.
Animal totems: Eagle : Our Eagle flies high into the Sun, into Father Sol, into Father Ra, the God of light. Bro Eagle has a sharp eye able to see all around from high over the problems, to give understanding on how to solve the problems, the battles to gain freedom. He has great strength in his talons. His medicine teaches us to grasp onto our dream, to never let go, to never give up.
I am here most of the day today. I am usually off on Monday but this day I want to be able to help guide, to help comfort, to help make the path to our dreams a little easier. We know the dream, we see the outcome, but the path is often a sacrifice, hard to continue to fight the good fight. May the fairies dance around with us today. Love ya, Me, Cherokee,, Cidro, Frankie capone, Sugar Fortune Cookie, T and the sweet spirit of Bob and bets.
