“I was born on the night of Samhain, when the barrier between the worlds is whisper-thin and when magic, old magic, sings its heady and sweet song to anyone who cares to hear it.” ― Carolyn MacCullough, Once a Witch
“I should add, however, that, particularly on the occasion of Samhain, bonfires were lit with the express intention of scaring away the demonic forces of winter, and we know that, at Bealltainn in Scotland, offerings of baked custard were made within the last hundred and seventy years to the eponymous spirits of wild animals which were particularly prone to prey upon the flocks – the eagle, the crow, and the fox, among others. Indeed, at these seasons all supernatural beings were held in peculiar dread. It seems by no means improbable that these circumstances reveal conditions arising out of a later solar pagan worship in respect of which the cult of fairy was relatively greatly more ancient, and perhaps held to be somewhat inimical.” author: Lewis Spence
The veil between the worlds, the Other Side, and Mother Earth opens up for all the ancients, ancestors, saints and devils to mix and walk among the mortals here. Dancing with the fairies who live beneath the mushrooms still dewy in the pasture, we can dream dreams of magick, unicorns, dragons, fairies, and sprites. We celebrate, we honor our passed over loves ones as in every culture we love, we miss, we long to see again those on the Other Side. In our quest to have fun, to enjoy the mischief, of this night, we almost remember this is our night to honor those we love, who are on another plane, a higher plane where no pain, no hurt, no sorrow reigns. This is the night we have to see to call out to ask with celebrations of gladness to remember, to share once more the love we have for our loves. Our ancients want us to remember them with fun. To live our lives fully with joy, knowing each one is right on the other side of the veil.
