Maybe we should develop a Crayola bomb as our next secret weapon. A happiness weapon. A beauty bomb. And every time a crisis developed, we would launch one. It would explode high in the air – explode softly – and send thousands, millions, of little parachutes into the air. Floating down to earth – boxes of Crayolas. And we wouldn’t go cheap, either – not little boxes of eight. Boxes of sixty-four, with the sharpener built right in. With silver and gold and copper, magenta and peach and lime, amber and umber and all the rest. And people would smile and get a little funny look on their faces and cover the world with imagination. ~Robert Fulghum
In the 1960s, there was many extremes in the world. Vietnam conflict, unrest among college students, the civil war for equality, yet even so the “hippie” movement brought about much color to the world. Rainbows on vans, peasant blouses, long brilliant skirts, tied dyed clothes, abstract paintings on mural walls, the earth seemed to burst with color promoting love, happiness, freedom of spirit. This era also was a time of great spiritual movement. Jesus freaks, or the hallucinogen drugs replacing the gods we could not seem to find in this harsh world, Beatles singing of Let it be, mother mary coming to me, or George Harrison’s My sweet Lord, yet Buddhism was on the rise, the zen teachings seemed to flow to try to find inner peace. Imaginations were alive with color, wisdom, power, giving way to changes in the world, that although many grew up, matured realizing there is no real Nirvana in the world, no Utopia, where we can all live in peace without pain, hurts, problems, we learned to balance our lives. Each day returning to spirit to try to hope, to try to strive, to reach out to each other with spiritual growth to build perhaps today to smile, today to bring the crayolas down from the sky painting the world with color, with happiness, with joy.
